Woodley Harriers 69-60 BLIZZARDS

Worse turn out of the season for the Div1 side. Only seven players, one regular starting 5, two more Div1 players and four Under 17’s from the Div3 side to make up the numbers.
But, what a performance, probably giving upto a foot a player in height this young side took the lead after four minutes 7-8 and soon took control 11-17 at the first buzzer with terrific assists from Stuart Elliott and Szymon Wawrzyniak on fire after Tom Mavronicholas had hit the early baskets.
Into the second quarter, the defence was holding tight with great work from Andreas Antoniou dominating the boards against all Woodley’s big men. Szymon was still hitting his shots and the BLIZZARDS now had 19-29 lead. A 5-0 run in the last minute of the quarter saw the locals back in the game just before half time 32-36 to the BLIZZARDS.
The first eight points of the second half also went the way of the locals to take the lead 39-36, a three from Stuart Elliott brought the score back level 39 all, but soon after a 13-0 had Woodley in control 52-41. The Blizzards were tiring, their shots were no longer dropping and both Andreas Antoniou and Stuart Elliott were on 3 fouls, with only seven players the Blizzards were now in trouble but never gave up and after going 60-45 behind early in the last quarter they fought all the way to the final whistle to go down 69-60.
A great team effort under the circumstances with the four U17’s, Jack Bond, Stuart Elliott, Ben Firrell and Taylor Dawson, all performing brilliantly along side Tom Mavronicholas strong on defence against some big lads, Szymon Wawrzyniak bagging the points and Andreas Antoniou amazing defensively but also working hard on offence with a few sweet assists.
This may have been a loss but it was probably their best performance against a full squad and at a massive height disadvantage .
